My first XNA Game: Aardvark
posted on 14:09 05/16/2009 by planetidiot.com
It's been a while since I posted anything, mainly because I've been doing pretty much nothing with my free time but work on my first XNA project.  It's an Arkanoid/Breakout style game called Aardvark and it's coming along nicely.  Yes I know there's about 3 Breakout clones released on XNA a week, but I don't care.  Mine looks better than most of them, and this is more an exercise in completing an XNA project start to finish than trying to market anything groundbreakingly new.  So without further ado: The first batch of demo videos!

Here is a longish video showing off a few levels.  I actually cut out some to make it shorter.  Editing this into a commercial style thing would be a waste of time at this point, since it's still missing loads of graphics and stuff.

Next up is the two player Co-op mode.  It's fun because you have to work together to beat the levels.  Co-Op mode will have some unique levels better suited towards this type of gameplay, though the ones shown here are shared by single player mode.

Finally we have the in-game level editor.  I promised myself I wouldn't release the game without it, and have even gone so far as to use it to make the built-in levels.  It took a fair amount of work to get it where it is now.  Once customized levels have been tested they can be played in succession in either single player or co-op mode.

Obviously I have my work cut out for me in terms of graphics, music, and such, not to mention the millions of little things on my to-do list. But it's very playable, very fun, and the graphics that are there are fairly decent looking for a "one man show" XNA game. There's no release date yet... but Aardvark should be wrapped up and available on Xbox Live Community Games this year.
