Middle Mouse Button Does NOT Mean Close
Who is the self-important jerk who decided that the often misunderstood middle mouse button was going to henceforth mean "close whatever is under it"? First I thought this was a bug in Chrome. On my laptop, pressing the left+right mouse buttons together simulates a middle mouse button click. My finger slipped when clicking a tab and POOF it was gone forever. I did a little digging and Firefox seems to have started this incredibly annoying trend. I wouldn't be so pissed off about it except there doesn't appear to be anyway to turn it off! This is not standard behavior, and it makes zero sense to say that the risk of closing a tab by accident is somehow worth the convenience of not having to take 1 millisecond it takes to click the little [x] on the tab.posted on 08:21 11/16/2009 by planetidiot.com Comments: 19:12 11/16/2009 bart sez: I think this may originate from Emacs. When you have a split pane view, if you middle-click on the split bar it closes the bottom panel. I've always thought this was idiotic, but wasn't about to infect the real world. Oh well. 05:02 11/20/2009 Dave sez: I really like having middle-click to close and use it all the time... but I use Firefox so even if I did accidently close a tab I can Undo Close Tab and get it and all it's history back. « Back to main |
