I would just like to give a shout out to the folks at http://www.macrium.com/ for creating the easy to use, powerful hard drive backup/recovery program, Reflect. I used the demo version to upgrade my drive.

Yesterday I was able to make an image of my C:\ (and the two mystery "Dell" partitions) and save them to an external USB Drive. Then the program let me create a startup Linux CD. I swapped the old hard drive for the newer larger one and booted off the CD. Using the simple interface to recover the images off the USB was totally painless and my computer is back as if nothing ever happened. Well, other than the fact that my drive is 5x as large.

So thanks to those guys! The demo version saved me from having to reinstall Windows, Visual Studio and the billions of other programs I use. The free demo is extremely feature-rich and there's a reasonably-priced paid version that does even more.
